Technical SEO is the groundwork that helps search engines find, crawl, understand and index your important pages. This guide focuses on the checks that matter most, without turning the process into a list of fixes with no context.

What a technical SEO foundation actually does

A technically healthy website makes it easier for search engines to reach important content and understand how pages relate to one another. It does not replace useful content, links or a strong offer. It removes avoidable barriers that can prevent those things from performing as well as they should.
The best place to start is not with a perfect score. Start with the customer journeys and pages that matter to the business: the homepage, product or service pages, important category pages and genuinely useful resources. Those URLs should be accessible, indexable, internally linked and technically consistent.

Crawling and indexing are different

Crawling is the process of discovering and requesting a URL. Indexing is the separate decision to store and potentially show that page in search results. A page can be crawlable but not indexed, or indexed with signals that point to a different canonical URL.

Make important pages easy to crawl

Clear navigation and internal links give crawlers reliable paths through a website. Every page you want people to find through search should be reachable from another useful page. Orphan pages, broken links and navigation that only works after complex interaction can make discovery harder.
Review robots.txt carefully. It is useful for managing crawler access, but it is not the right tool for removing a public page from search results. A careless disallow rule can also stop crawlers from accessing resources needed to understand or render a page.

Control indexability and duplicate URLs

Not every accessible URL needs to appear in search. Filter pages, internal search results, duplicate archives and thin utility pages can create unnecessary noise. Decide which version of a page should be indexed, then make the technical signals agree.
Use a self-referencing canonical on the preferred version of an indexable page. When two URLs contain the same or very similar content, point their canonical signals to the preferred URL and keep internal links consistent. Use noindex when a public page should remain accessible to users but should not be included in search results.

Avoid conflicting signals

A canonical pointing to one URL, an internal link pointing to another and a sitemap listing a third version creates uncertainty. HTTPS, hostname, trailing-slash and parameter conventions should be consistent across templates and navigation.

Use XML sitemaps as a clean discovery source

An XML sitemap should list canonical, indexable URLs that you genuinely want search engines to discover. It should not become a storage area for redirects, errors, duplicate pages or URLs blocked from indexing.
For a small, well-linked website, a sitemap may not be the main discovery path, but it is still useful for monitoring. Submit it in Google Search Console and review processing errors, discovered URLs and indexing patterns. Remember that sitemap submission supports discovery; it does not guarantee indexing.

Strengthen page-level technical signals

Technical SEO also lives inside each page. A descriptive title, one clear H1, a logical H2–H3 structure and useful metadata help search engines and visitors understand the topic quickly. Structured data can add machine-readable context when it accurately represents visible content.
Performance and mobile usability matter because technical problems affect real visitors. Compress heavy images, reserve space for media, reduce unnecessary scripts and test key templates on actual mobile devices. Focus on stable, usable pages rather than chasing a score without checking the experience.

Check templates, not only individual URLs

A single template issue can affect hundreds of pages. Audit product, category, article and landing-page templates separately, then verify a sample of live URLs after every major theme or plugin change.

Build a repeatable technical SEO review

Technical SEO is not a one-time setup. New content, redesigns, plugins, migrations and server changes can alter crawl paths or indexing signals. A short recurring review is more useful than waiting for traffic to fall before investigating.
Track the issues that matter to your website: index coverage, broken internal links, redirect chains, canonical conflicts, sitemap health, structured data errors and changes to important page templates. Record what changed and recheck the affected pages after fixes.

Treat the file as a curated guide rather than a list of every URL. Include stable, valuable public pages and keep the descriptions accurate. Because adoption varies, do not promise that publishing llms.txt will improve rankings, traffic or citations. It is one readiness signal within a wider technical and content strategy.

Keep the file maintainable

A short, current llms.txt file is more useful than a large file filled with outdated or duplicate URLs. Review it when products, documentation or key resources change.

Monitor AI crawler activity with context

Crawler analytics can show whether recognised bots requested particular paths and when those requests occurred. This is useful operational information, but a crawler visit does not prove that a page was used in an answer or that a brand gained visibility.
Look for patterns rather than isolated hits. Are important guides being reached? Are bots repeatedly receiving errors? Do requests stop after a robots.txt or server change? Combine crawler information with server logs, Search Console, referral data and manual checks of your priority topics.

Use a practical AI search readiness checklist

Start with the pages that matter most, fix clear technical barriers and improve content where readers genuinely need more detail. Then add structured discovery signals and monitoring. This order keeps the work useful even as AI search products and crawler behaviour continue to change.
